Fantastic news for Subclass 417 Working Holiday Maker and Subclass 462 Work & Holiday visa holders in Australia. Critical COVID-19 work in the medical and healthcare fields will now count towards eligibility for a second or third 417 or 462 visa. It is now classified as “specified work”! This will be backdated from 31 January 2020 and will be from any postcode in Australia.
This is brilliant news for those of you who have been working away during this pandemic as a professional or ancillary worker in a healthcare and/or medical sector. It is a just reward for your services to the Australian community.
The explanatory statement accompanying the new legislation states:
There is a little bit of fine print attached which is:
- Only “critical COVID-19 work” (see below) in a healthcare/medical facility can be counted from 31 January 2020.
- The work can be undertaken anywhere in Australia.
- The work only counts for a visa application that is lodged on or after the date of the relevant instrument – which is 18 August 2020.
- The instrument does not have a retrospective commencement.
“Critical COVID-19 Work” is defined as:
- medical treatment
- nursing
- contact tracing
- testing and research
- support services such as cleaning of medical and health care facilities and equipment.
