How To Choose A Migration Agent? Top 3 Tips!

11 Mar

Finding the right migration agent to handle your case is just like finding the right pair of shoes, you need to try a few on first and test out how they fit before making your decision, and when you do decide to buy, you should be confident that they will last the distance.

For many people, the process of trying to find the right person or company seems daunting, and entrusting your future to someone can seem like a big risk. For this reason, we have narrowed down our top 3 tips in order to help you find the right help for your visa situation!

1. Check that the migration agent/s are Registered with OMARA.

As stated in our article on 5 Reasons Why You Should Use A Migration Agent, any person practicing Australian Migration Law MUST be approved by OMARA (the government body who regulates migration agents and lawyers). ALL migration agents must abide by a certain code of conduct and all of them have a dedicated number (MARN) which identifies them as being registered and legitimate. Eg: Seamus Taaffe – MARN 0901684

You absolutely as a matter of priority, need to double check that the migration agent/s you are speaking to have been registered. If you don’t, you cannot guarantee that they are providing you with the correct advice or representing you properly. You can do this by going to the MARA website and looking up their name or MARN number.

2. Read the reviews.

Whilst it is important to take reviews with a grain of salt, they do offer insight into companies and places and how they generally work with their clients. Many people use reviews as an indicator, as if a friend had recommended that place or company, and you should use them as a resource to be more confident in who you choose in the long run.

3. Seek advice on your situation before you commit.

It is very easy to get caught up in the details of your situation and let the confusion take over, but it is unnecessary to go down this path. Registered migration agents are trained professionals who work with unique situations every day and they understand the complexities of Australian migration law. Booking a consultation with a migration agent means you not only gain clarity on your situation, but you also get a feel for the agent or company and if they are someone you want to work with moving forward.

Unfortunately, securing an Australian visa is not a cheap process and neither is using a reputable agent. Be very aware of people claiming to be miracle workers and charging small amounts for their fees. Likewise, shop around before you choose where you get advice and be wary of free consultations. You need to think of your future migration agent as your legal representative, and if you want to be certain that your case is in the right hands, you need to be willing to compare and to pay for their advice.
